A Message from the Principal

Mr. Owen
Sunset Elementary School Principal
bowen@colquitt.k12.ga.us
Welcome to another year at Sunset School!  I certainly hope you enjoyed your summer and that you are ready for a great school year. Parents, as you are well aware, you play an important role in your child’s educational development. Traditionally, our Sunset students have benefited from exceptionally strong parent support.

During the coming year, I strongly encourage you to stay closely involved in your child’s activities and studies, both at school and at home. Our number one goal at Sunset School is to teach our boys and girls to read on or above grade level. To help us accomplish this goal for all of our students, we implement an instructional design to differentiate instruction for all students. I am excited about the way the strategies used in this design provide for student success, and I hope you will help us promote your child's literacy skills. Parents, you can do this by encouraging your child to read every afternoon/night at home and by discussing together what they are reading. Celebrate reading successes and give support when children need help. By working as a team, we can reach our reading goals.

This year we will continue to be working hard to improve student test scores in math and other academic areas. Parents, you can help with this by: having high academic expectations for your child; checking your child’s homework each night; and by staying in touch with your child’s teacher. We look forward to working with your family this school year. Together we can make 2011-2012 the best school year yet.
